Mo’ news is good news

I’ve been up a hill.

You know the saying “no news is good news”? Well, when it comes to this blog, that’s usually the case. If I haven’t updated the site in a while, it’s often because I’ve been cray-cray busy (Neil taught me that phrase, cray-cray. Did I do it right?) and that’s almost always a good thing. While I try to keep people updated with Twitter and Facebook, apparently there’s been some sort of news event dominating the media recently, so some of my news might have slipped through the cracks. Even handsome bastards have been getting it on the act. With this in mind, here’s a wee roundup of stuff you might have missed.

Linn Records

Last week I announced that I recently signed a distribution deal with Glasgow-based record company Linn Records! You might know the name from their world-famous range of audio equipment but as a record company they specialise in studio quality master downloads. What this means is that when I release a new record it will also be distributed on Linn’s website where you’ll have the option to purchase and download high fidelity studio masters. That’s as opposed to what you might normally get from iTunes for example. For more information on Linn’s vision and why mp3s might not be the best way to listen to music, check out this interview with Gilad Tiefenbrun, the boss of Linn Records. Of course, my music will still be able to download through Bandcamp, so fear not if you prefer the personal touch (or the good night’s sleep that comes from knowing you’re paying an artist directly. Or if you just like getting something in the mail).
It feels great to have the support of a record company like Linn, and I really do encourage you to check them out. Apart from anything else, they’re just lovely people. Check out my artist profile and releases on Linn at this lovely link.

BBC 6 Music

Someone else’s support who I’m really lucky to have is BBC DJ and singer/songwriter, Tom Robinson. Tom’s played my stuff a few times over the past year or two and this week he featured my latest single Deadpool on his BBC Introducing Mixtape. Most flattering of all is this review that Tom wrote about my work:

“For me, the wry, laconic lofi-fi acoustic pop of Glasgow-based songwriter Shambles Miller – in fact his whole musical persona – is completely irresistible. Be clear, this is not music made with an eye either on the Top 40 or fame in the blogosphere. But it 100% fulfils Steve Lamacq’s criterion that any artist worth their salt sounds like they need to make this particular music or they would explode. Shambles embodies the wonderfully dry Scots truthfulness to be found in the work of Aidan Moffat, King Creosote and even our friends on this same mixtape Drunk Mule. Deadpool is certainly a fine track, but frankly I’d recommend downloading everything you can get your hands on and immersing yourself in the unique – sometimes funny, sometimes angry, always unfailingly honest – world of Shambles Miller.”

The assertion that I need to be doing this or I would explode is the most accurate description of why I do this that I’ve ever heard and I’m incredibly flattered by Tom’s words. You can listen to the show at some of the links above, or you can download it here.

Gigsgigsgigs

Passengers on the night bus to Leith were unfazed.

As always I’ve been busy gigging and I’ve got more coming up. If you’re not from Glasgow and want to catch me nearer your neck of the woods, I’ll be heading to Gourock, Ayr, and Doune the Rabbit Hole over the next month or so. For a list of gig dates/venues/times, check out Songkick, Bandcamp, or Tumblr. This past week I also played a wee gig in Edinburgh and I must say, it’s definitely the first time I’ve played a gig on a double decker bus in a pub’s courtyard. I’ve also never had to stoop quite so much during a set as I did during this one. To get an idea of what I got up to, there’s this Vine and the best “I’m driving a bus” selfie you’ve ever seen.

Safety Selfie First

I also got the chance to catch a great set by James Mackenzie, who I recommend listening to with your ears at your earliest convenience. Click all my stuff first though, eh? Man’s got to eat.

Have I been up to anything else? Well lets see…I set “Rapey” Robin Thicke straight about something, had a beer up Ben A’an, hung out with a wee tortoise pal, and got the affirmation I was seeking from the Sultan of Selfie himself(ie).

Like I say, I’ve been dain stuff. Thanks for reading folks!

Til next time,

Five reasons why people think you’re gullible (or how I became the WWE Champion)

Hah! Got you. Hello everyone, I hope you’ve had a lovely Christmas, a happy New Year, and if you’ve had a January birthday (like me), I hope you made the best of it. I’ve had a lovely festive period and my wheels are moving pretty slowly as we trundle into 2013. I think my brainium has been weighed down by weeks of over-indulgence but the boozy mist is lifting and the stodgy fog is clearing so here’s a wee roundup of what’s been happening over the last few weeks and what’s coming up in 2013.

First of all, I’m very flattered to be included in a couple of recent podcasts. I managed to make it to #23 in Edinburgh Man‘s end-of-year poll, which you can listen to here and I’ve been featured in Scottish Fiction‘s best of 2012 roundup which you can listen to right here, no foolin’. At the end of 2012 I was also included in this blog’s list of top tracks of the year. Bongo!

The people have been crying out for this WWE Championship/jumper combo.

In some non music-related news, in 2012 I became the WWE Champion. It was a great moment, as I’ve been training hard for years now by sitting on my couch and drunkenly watching the wrasslin’, often whilst eating a kebab. All that hard work has finally paid off. Think you’ve got what it takes to beat me and get this gold? Come at me, bro. Come at me.

So what’s in store for 2013? Well first of all, in February I’m excited to announce that I’ll be playing Scottish Fiction Presents: Aye Tunes Vs. Peenko on the 23rd of February alongside Lovers Turn to Monsters and Beerjacket. It’s at the Roxy 171 and you can buy tickets right here or check out the event page for more info.

I’ll have more gig announcements soon, but my last piece of good news is that I’m playing Brew at the Bog this summer! I’m really excited to be playing BrewDog’s festival in May, alongside folk like Kitty the Lion, Michael Cassidy, Randolph’s Leap, and Olympic Swimmers amongst many other awesome acts. Check out the website for the full lineup so far and for more details.

If you’d like to get in touch or keep up with whatever nonsense I’m up to at any given moment, you can find me at Twitter, Facebook, and even Tumblr. How else will you find out that I tarted up a bit for the end of 2012 or flatter me with ego-tickling questions like this? And of course you can listen to or buy my music at Bandcamp. You could also go old school (and I recommend that you do) by popping down to Vespbar on Sundays where I host their open mic night.

Well that’s just about woken me up. Time to fist-bump 2013, get into a ’64 Impala and shout “hey 2012, eat my dust!”

Or something.

Til next time,

“Rapture” live at Cabaret Voltaire

Hello folks! As you might know, I recently played a gig at Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh, supporting Jack Savoretti with We See Lights. It was a braw gig all round and one of my pals captured this wee performance of my song “Rapture”.

I hope you enjoy it! If you like it, feel free to like it. Or y’know, tell people. Or both.

Cheers folks!

Til next time,

I don’t blog about EVERYTHING…

Hello folks! Jings aren’t you a sight for sore eyes. I noticed that I haven’t blogged as much recently and yet my friends still make fun of me for blogging everything. CANNY WIN. However, I have been right busy recently, which is a better excuse for not blogging than having done nothing. What an odd sentence…

SO. What have I been up to recently? Well I’ve been gigging of course, including a secret Edinburgh gig and having an awesome time down in Ayr at Su Casa. I also played Bloc in Glasgow, fresh off the boat from Colonsay sporting some serious sleep deprivation and a wee tan. I’ll tell you all about that stuff in more detail soon enough, but for now I thought I’d recap my more digital adventures.

As you might know, I recently recorded a wee song called “Rapture” and offered it as a free download. Well, it’s also had some radio play! If you missed it the other day, Jim Gellatly was kind enough to play Rapture on his Amazing Radio show, which you can listen back to on this tasty wee link. It’s always a great show, so do your ears a favour, eh?
Rapture was also played on Pulse Radio, on a show called In the Jabba with Punk Morvs! You can check out the details of her show on facebook and find out when to tune in for a really eclectic mix of music.
I was also honoured to have one of my songs featured on the Scottish Fiction show, again on Pulse Radio. Presenter Neil Wilson had RM Hubbert on as a special guest for some chat and to play some tunes, so it’s one to wrap yer ears round. The pair fair made me blush at one point, so if you fancy hearing the show, you can listen again on the Scottish Fiction blog. Go’frit!

That should do for now I expect. My other main piece of news is that I’m going to be supporting Jack Savoretti at Cabaret Voltaire on the 26th of August as part of the Edge Festival in Edinburgh! I’m fair excited so I am, and I really hope some of you can make it along. I have a few tickets to sell, so if you fancy some tickets for the show, get in touch at shamblesmiller(at)gmail.com or on any other preferred media. Carrier pigeons accepted.

Til next time folks!

Quick! Go! Stuff! Now!

(Note: This post will work a lot better if you read it in the slightly frantic, hurried tone I’m writing it in. In my head. Enjoy!!)

Hi folks! You look great, I look like a fancy hobo, you know the drill. This is going to be kind of a “remember those things I mentioned?” post, by the way. LET’S GO!

Remember that review in Pornography for Cowards that I mentioned? Here it is!

Braw. I was right pleased with that. Even quoted the lyric I’m simulateously most proud/ashamed of. One more than the other. I’ll let you guess. Sorry for the image quality by the way, my scanner hates me, but I’m still on good terms with my phone camera.

Remember those gigs I mentioned? Here’s what I’ve got on the horizon in Glasgow at the moment:

I’m also going to be playing a couple of shows with Dave Arcari in June, along with Jim Byrne. Exciting!  They are:

Aces!

Remember I mentioned something about a podcast? Well, on twitter anyway. And, y’know, in life? It exists now! Dude on it sounds like me and has a name that sounds like mine. Weird. Check it out here!

Lastly, remember that FUCKING HUGE CUPCAKE I never mentioned before? The one a certain lovely lady made for me? Remember I mentioned it in my head? Here it is!

Wow.

That’s all for now folks, gotta go, take care!
